The Helen Grindrod Social Mobility Prize is a new outreach prize for law students who meet one or more of the below social mobility criteria. The aim of the prize is to improve access to the profession and to support high achieving students by providing experiences and opportunities and help them make informed choices about their career at the Bar.

The winning students will be offered the following as part of the prize:

  • A monetary prize of £250 per winner.
  • The Lincoln's Inn Prize Winners Summer School which will take place Wednesday 17 – Friday 19 July 2024 at Lincoln’s Inn. Accommodation and travel expenses for the winner will be arranged and paid for as part of the prize.
  • Membership of the Inn.
  • A mentor.
  • A mini-pupillage at a local or London chambers, if they would prefer, funded by the Inn’s Mini-Pupillage Grant Scheme.

We have opened applications for the prize and this form is for tutors to submit their letter of support for the student.

Successful candidates will be among the very best of their cohort, who meet our eligibility criteria below.

Prospective members of the Inn currently studying their second year of a qualifying law degree (on course for a 2:1 higher) and not a member of another Inn.

Applicants must have attended a state or private school with the help of a means tested scholarship and meet one or more of the below criteria:

  • Ever been in receipt of free school meals.
  • First in their family to attend university.
  • Have parent(s)/guardian(s) who received income support or they themselves are in receipt of income or housing benefits.
  • Spent time in care during their school years.
  • Refugee status.
  • Those who are or have been a young adult carer.
  • Eligible for a maintenance loan from Student Finance of more than £6,700 per year.

We would also like to see applications from those from non-traditional backgrounds and those who will gain the most from the experience. You can find some tutor guidance here.

Tutors must provide their letter of support to us by 5 pm on Monday 27 May. Any applications or supporting letters received after the deadline will be not be considered.
