Derek Hughes Scholarship Program

Application Form

Thank you for your interest in the WSIA Education Foundation's Derek Hughes Scholarship Program.
 
In order to be eligible for this scholarship, students must meet the following guiding principles:
  • Have an overall GPA of 3.25 or a major GPA of 3.5 or higher (both on a 4.0 scale);
  • Be a college sophomore, junior or senior enrolled full time in an undergraduate program and not graduating before Fall 2022 (graduate students are not eligible);
  • Satisfy one of the following substantive requirements:
    • be pursuing a major, minor, or concentration in Risk Management and/or Insurance (RMI); or
    • have taken RMI courses; or
    • have work experience in the insurance industry.
  • Plan to pursue a position in the excess and surplus lines industry upon graduation.

Application Process

Step One:
  • Recommendation Letter - Please have one of your references email a letter of recommendation directly to Christine Timmerman at chris@wsia.org by March 6. Your reference should be a work supervisor, faculty member or teacher, coach, or someone else who knows you well (not a family member or friend).

Step Two:
Have the following three documents prepared to upload at the end of this application (all saved as PDF documents):
  1. Resume - Resumes must be no longer than two pages.

  2. Unofficial Transcripts (The committee may request your official transcripts as verification. Note that your transcript should include your Fall 2021 grades but if you submit before your grades are posted then you can email updated transcripts to chris@wsia.org.)

  3. Essay - (one page, can be single spaced, and a maximum of 500 words). The committee advises all candidates to research and carefully consider their personal response to one of these two questions:

    A. Upon graduation, what area of the surplus lines industry are you interested in working in and why? How will you make a difference? - OR - B. What specific characteristics make you a good fit for the surplus lines industry and why?
