WPI High-Risk Travel Exception Petition

Instructions

  1. WPI strongly encourages all WPI travelers to review WPI’s International Travel Risk Policy before submitting this petition. WPI students, or faculty and staff traveling with students, may not be required or coerced to travel to High-Risk Destinations on WPI-Sponsored Travel by anyone (e.g., by a faculty member, supervisor, or advisor).
  1. WPI students, and faculty and staff traveling with students, are not permitted to travel to High-Risk Destinations on WPI-Sponsored International Travel unless they obtain an exception from the Global Travel Review and Response Team (GTRTT) and the Provost (or designee).
  1. WPI students must use the petition below to apply for an exception. If more than one student is traveling with a WPI faculty or staff member, the WPI faculty or staff member may complete the petition for the group, in collaboration with the student(s).
  1. The exception petition provides an opportunity for the WPI traveler(s) to demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the risks involved in their proposed travel to a High-Risk Destination and the steps they are taking or plan to take to mitigate those risks. In reviewing the petition, the GTRRT and the Provost (or designee) will consider the necessity of the travel and risks and mitigation efforts of the traveler(s).
  1. Please contact the Associate Director of Global Risk Management (globaltravel@wpi.edu) as early as possible in your travel planning process and allow ample time for the GTRRT and the Provost to review your petition. Petitions submitted less than four (4) weeks prior to departure will not be allowed, except under rare circumstances.
Covid-19:

* The COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect states and countries differently and travel increases your chance of getting and spreading COVID-19.

*No student is required to travel abroad at this time; any participation in travel during the pandemic is strictly voluntary and the traveler assumes responsibility for travel during this trip.

*The traveler understands that the university may be limited in its ability to provide assistance and resources in the event of a crisis, including the possibility of being stuck in the host country due to newly imposed travel restrictions or a positive COVID-19 diagnosis.

*The university retains the right to withdraw approval and/or require the traveler to leave a high-risk location at any time.
